Refugees excluded from COVID-19 vaccine rollout: World Vision report

Hunger is becoming a major concern for refugees, with 77 per cent unable to meet food needs during the global pandemic, a snapshot by World Vision has found. A new report by the international aid agency also warns that refugees and internally displaced people - who are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 - are the lowest priority group for vaccinations. The High Risk- Low Priority paper says that COVID-19 is now surging in poorer countries which are ill-equipped to contain the virus, but have access to just three per cent of global vaccine doses. These countries host over forty million of the world’s forcibly displaced people, who as a result, are being left out of the extremely limited vaccination campaigns that host countries can deliver.

Let the Biloela children be children: World Vision

World Vision Australia has called for the immediate removal of the BiloelaTamil family from Christmas Island to allow young girls, Tharunicaa and Kopika Murugappan, to enjoy the childhood that every child deserves. Detained offshore on Christmas Island since August 2019, Tharunicaa, 3, and Kopika, 5, are the only children left in immigration detention in Australia. They have been kept there and in Melbourne for a total of almost 1000 days while their parents challenge attempts to deport them to Sri Lanka. World Vision Australia CEO Daniel Wordsworth said it was grossly unfair for the children to be denied a normal childhood.

‘One of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world’: World Vision statement in response to Goma evacuations

Hundreds of thousands of people are evacuating the city of Goma during amass exodus in fear due to the ongoing threat of the nearby Mount Nyiragongo volcano. A worsening series of tremors has terrified people over the last few days. The governor of the province has now ordered the evacuation of people from the city, warning that lava had been detected under Goma and nearby Lake Kivu. The fear is that tremors could lead to a fresh eruption of the volcano – that last erupted on Saturday night - or even set off a chain reaction leading to the release of large amounts of poisonous methane gas from the lake alongside the city. If that happens the gas could prove deadly.
