World Vision welcomes funding for Afghanistan
Thursday, October 6, 2016
World Vision Australia welcomes the announcement by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop that the Australian Government will continue its commitment to aid in Afghanistan.
In particular, World Vision welcomes the continuation of bilateral contributions until at least 2020. Bilateral contributions from the Australia Government make possible life-changing initiatives such as the Australia Afghanistan Community Resilience Scheme.
World Vision’s AACRS-funded program is currently in its third year of implementation, benefiting more than 14,000 rural households through agricultural improvements, access to drinking water and irrigation, and a greater knowledge of and linkage to markets.
With the Australian Government’s current commitment, initiatives like the AACRS will be able to continue improving the health, wellbeing and economic futures of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable, including women, children and people living with disability.
World Vision Australia looks forward to continuing its close collaboration with the Australian Government to ensure bilateral contributions to Afghanistan continue to achieve sustained success for the most vulnerable.
Ms Bishop announced on 5 October that Australia would extend an $80 million annual commitment of bilateral aid to Afghanistan until 2020 and would also provide an additional $10 million to the World Food Programme to help support emergency food and nutrition to the growing number of people internally displaced due to conflict and violence in Afghanistan.
