World Vision staff are responding to a massive 8.2-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Chile today.
Waves of up to two metres have been reported to have hit Chile and Peru, but neighbouring countries stretching through to Central America could also be affected as waves continue to batter the shoreline. The tsunami could potentially hit Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The international aid agency has been working with the local authorities in Chile to evacuate people from project areas following a national evacuation alert for coastal cities.
World Vision Chile Communications Manager Fabrizio Guzman said that information from the north of the country, near the epicentre of the earthquake, has been sketchy due to the breakdown of telecommunications.
"Our emergencies and project staff are trying to find out the extent of the damage and are working with local authorities to get more information,” Mr Guzman said.
“Once we have a clearer picture we will be ready to immediately respond depending on the scale of the impact. Information is very unclear at the moment."
Authorities have reported that there are no fatalities so far.
