World Vision appalled by air attack on refugees

World Vision Australia is appalled by the latest shocking air attack in Syria, with reports that at least 28 people have been killed in a strike on a refugee camp in rebel-held northern Syria.
“These are people who are displaced within their own country after their homes were destroyed. They have stayed in Syria in the hope that peace will come and they can rebuild their lives,” said World Vision Australia chief executive Tim Costello.
“Actions like these will only force more people to consider making desperate and treacherous journeys to Europe or countries that offer the hope that they can raise their families in peace.
“The international community must use all diplomatic means at its disposal to ensure these attacks stop. Protecting children has to be on the top of everyone's agenda, particularly as leaders meet at the World Humanitarian Summit this month."
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that 28 people had been killed at the Kamouna camp near Sarmada in Idlib province, close to the Turkish border, including women and children, and that 50 more were wounded.
The Local Co-ordination Committees, an opposition activist network, said about 30 people had been killed and dozens wounded. Images on social media show refugee tents destroyed and the ground smouldering.
Tim Costello is available for interview.
