Medical Treatment Bill passes both houses of parliament

Today a coalition of refugee and humanitarian organisations and members of the public demonstrated what can happen when we stand together as one.

“We stood up against all odds, not on the basis of right or left, but on the basis of right and wrong,” said World Vision CEO Claire Rogers.

“Now those who have suffered at our hands will get the treatment they so urgently need. This is justice, this is what Australians want.

“Thank you to the thousands of Australians who have been calling and emailing their local MPs over many months,” Ms Rogers said. “Thank you also to all the organisations who have stood with us.

“The medical evidence is overwhelming: indefinite detention destroys lives.”

The bill has just passed Parliament giving hope to the severely sick and defenceless people trapped there for the past five years.

“This bill gets the balance between compassion and safety right.”

“Your MPs have listened, democracy works,” concluded Ms Rogers.
