Australians have one week left to double their donations through the Federal Government’s dollar-for-dollar initiative for those suffering from the drought and famine in East Africa.
So far Australians have given more than $6 million to aid agencies for emergency relief since the launch of the scheme on October 5. The Government will double contributions until Wednesday November 30.
More than 13 million people have been affected by the drought spanning Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania. Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced from their homes to travel great distances to refugee camps.
World Vision has been responding to the slow onset emergency since February this year.
Staff on the ground in east Africa are aiming to assist 2.2 million people by the end of year.
World Vision has responded with food distribution, nutrition and healthcare, water and sanitation development programs and training on livelihoods and agriculture to affected people.
The Australian public has generously donated over $4.8 million to World Vision including over $1.3 million raised since the Government initiative was announced. All funds raised will be used to deliver urgent assistance.
The initiative is a unique opportunity to support twice as many people affected by the drought and food crisis.
World Vision is collecting public donations through its East Africa Emergency Appeal to help affected communities. See
