Desperate times for Syrian refugees as food aid suspended

The funding of critical relief operations for millions of Syrian refugees is of great concern to the humanitarian sector today after the UN World Food Programme (WFP) announced a forced suspension of food vouchers due to a funding crisis.

World Vision Australia’s Head of Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Manager Majella Hurney said  the suspension of food aid  highlights the urgent need for funding for the Syria regional response, which is largest humanitarian crises in the world today.

“The WFP’s announcement is alarming and is likely to have very serious impact on those Syrian refugees who were dependent on cash vouchers for their survival,” Ms Hurney said. It is likely to put more strain on the resources of host communities who are already at breaking point in coping with the huge influx of Syrian refugees

More than 10 million Syrians have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the conflict which broke out in March 2011. Over three million have crossed borders to shelter in neighbouring countries while 7.6 million are displaced within Syria.

The WFP announcement comes as Syrian refugees face the onset of winter, with many living in temporary shelters not designed to withstand freezing temperatures.

The UN appeal for its regional response to the conflict is underfunded by a staggering 49%, with needs growing daily

“We know that the humanitarian need is not reducing and relief organisations are continually relying on the generosity of governments and the general public to keep operating,” Ms Hurney said.”

World Vision is one of the largest NGO partners of the World Food Programme on food assistance, and provides life-saving food assistance to an average of 1.3 million hungry people each month in over 30 countries.
