What is it?

The Multiplying Gift Appeal helps World Vision deliver as much as ten times more to desperately hungry people. Every year, World Vision partners with the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) to deliver life-saving food aid and other relief essentials to desperately hungry children and their families. Every $1 you give allows World Vision to deliver 10 times the value of your donation in food aid and relief essentials. The food aid is provided by the WFP, but storage and distribution is managed by World Vision.

About the Multiplying Gift Appeal

Multiplying Gift Appeal: Helping us deliver 10 times more to hungry children and their families.

World Vision’s Multiplying Gift Appeal has been an annual fundraising campaign for World Vision since 1996. For many years it has been strongly supported by donations made by both the general public and corporate Australia.

With funds raised by this appeal, World Vision distributes life-saving food and relief essentials in countries where people are in desperate need of assistance. A small percentage of donations may also be applied towards the educational, environmental and management activities of the projects, and the costs of staff to run them.

What "multiplying gift" means

When you give to the Multiplying Gift Appeal, we do just that: multiply your gift 10 times and help save lives. This means that:

  • $85 can provide up to $850 worth of life-saving food – enough to feed 10 families of 5 for one month*
  • $170 can provide up to $1,700 worth of life-saving food – enough to feed 20 families of 5 for one month*
  • $850 can provide up to $8,500 worth of life-saving food – enough to feed 100 families of 5 for one month*

Corporate Australia supporting the Multiplying Gift Appeal

The support shown by Australian businesses to this appeal is a huge part of its success, each and every year. For many Australian business, seeing the value of a donation multiplied by ten brings enormous reward, and certainty that they are making a difference.

This year, World Vision once again encourages corporate Australia to make a contribution to the Multiplying Gift Appeal that really will help change lives. World Vision asks that Australian businesses consider giving an amount such as:

  • $3,500, to provide $35,000 worth of life-saving food - enough to feed 412 families of 5 for one month*
  • $7,500, to provide $75,000 worth of life-saving food - enough to feed 882 families of 5 for one month*
  • $12,000, to provide $120,000 worth of life-saving food - enough to feed 1,412 families of 5 for one month*

* Please note, amounts shown are indicative (based on contracts in the 12 month period prior to September 2009). Any significant variation will be updated on this site. The price of $85 is calculated based on the cost it takes to deliver the food to all benefiting countries, divided by the total number of families receiving a monthly ration of food. The quantity of ration is based on the global Sphere standard for disaster affected populations of 1,600 kcals/person/day.

Should funds raised for the Multiplying Gift Appeal exceed the amount required to fund World Vision's work in delivering food aid and other essential supplies provided by the World Food Programme and other United Nations agencies, World Vision will use the excess funds in other work to help communities respond to the effects of food insecurity.

Who the Multiplying Gift Appeal helps

In 2009, more than 600,000 hungry children and their families in northern Uganda and other countries throughout Africa and Asia were assisted by food distribution made possible by this appeal. Over $4.5 million was donated by generous Australian individuals and businesses.

In 2010, funds raised will provide food aid for hungry families in Mozambique and other countries throughout Africa and Asia. These people will receive monthly rations of:

  • 10kg of cereals (sorghum, maize, rice)
  • 1kg of pulses (beans, peas, lentils)

Once again, World Vision hopes to raise enough to provide food aid to over 600,000 people - those living in Mozambique and others in similar situations in Kenya, Sudan (northern & southern), Myanmar, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Distributing the food aid

Map showing food aid distribution supported by Ten Times

The World Food Programme (WFP) sources food locally, regionally, or, if necessary, from overseas. WFP then transports the food overland by train and truck to distribution points in Mozambique. The World Vision team will receive the food aid here, and be responsible for its warehousing and distribution to registered beneficiaries.

What you will receive

If we receive your donation before 30 June, you may be able to claim it as a deduction this financial year, depending, of course, on your individual tax position. For corporate donations, the estimated tax savings rate would be the applicable company tax rate.

How you can help

Donate to the Multiplying Gift Appeal and World Vision will distribute ten times the value of your donation in food aid and relief essentials to desperately hungry people.
